Our Government Statistician, Leota Aliielua Salani represented Samoa at the 57th Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UN57SC) held from 3–6 March at the United Nations.
The Commission brings together chief statisticians and senior officials from around the world to discuss and guide how official statistics are produced, governed, and shared globally. These discussions play an important role in shaping how countries measure key areas such as population, health, economic development, climate change impacts, and progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Leota attended the meeting as the Government Statistician and Chair of the Pacific Heads of Planning and Statistics (HOPS),
During the event, Leota also served as one of the panelists, sharing insights and perspectives from Samoa and the Pacific on key statistical issues, including data governance, climate change statistics, and improving data dissemination and access.
His participation highlights Samoa’s continued commitment to strengthening official statistics and ensuring that the realities and priorities of Small Island Developing States are reflected in global statistical discussions.
